While the welcoming sunshine is making an appearance today, Flood Warnings still remain in effect for the Chikaskia River near Blackwell, and the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River near Tonkawa. As of Wednesday Morning, The Chikaskia (cha-kas-kia) at Blackwell was at 32.5 feet, over 3 feet above flood stage. Major flooding is occurring. Flood waters are covering several city blocks in northeast Blackwell. Some residents may suffer minor flooding along with up to depths of 4 feet in streets. Highway 177 north of Blackwell, and Hubbard Road southeast of Blackwell are closed due to flooded waters on the roadway. Blackwell Avenue is topped at the old river bridge crossing. Some farmlands in northeastern Grant and Kay Counties are experiencing as much as 5 feet of water.
As for the Salt Fork of the Arkansas River near Tonkawa, Minor flooding is occurring. The river is currently 3 feet above flood stage at 20 feet. The intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and Fountain Road south of Tonkawa, and State Highway 156 south of Ponca City, are both closed due to flooding.
Both the Chikaskia River and Salt Fork of the Arkansas River are expected to fall below flood stage sometime tomorrow morning.
