NEWKIRK – The Kay County Commission approved a road use agreement with Duke Energy for its Frontier 2 Wind Power Project on Tuesday morning.
The agreement passed 2-1, with District 3 Commissioner John Wilson casting the dissenting vote. The project that will place 80 wind turbines east of Newkirk and Kildare has sparked controversies with the public concerned about health and environment at recent meetings. Around 30 people attended Tuesday’s meeting at the Kay County Courthouse in Newkirk, Prior to the meeting, Duke Energy spoke with Kaw Nation members and decided to scrape away wind turbines that were close to southeastern edge of Newkirk, along with plans to build turbines west of U.S. 77.
No construction or completion date has been announced by Duke Energy, but the project would have been effectively stalled-out without county approval of a road use agreement.
