Winds cause grass fires and electrical issues Tuesday

PONCA CITY – Gusty winds swept across most of Oklahoma Tuesday as low humidity mixed in to create a major fire concern.

According to OHP Troop K on Facebook, grass fires were reported in Kay, Payne and Osage in Northern Oklahoma late Tuesday afternoon. Two fires reported included a grass fire along U.S. 177 north of the 7 Clans Paradise Casino near Red Rock which was later put out. Another grass fire was reported at Adobe Road & Pecan Road between Newkirk and Kildare. Newkirk, Kildare, & River Road we were able to get it stopped. No serious damage has been reported from the fires.

Outside of the grass fires that occurred, the gusty winds caused problems with electrical issues. In Ponca City, power outages were reported across the area before being restored late Tuesday. U.S. 177 at Highland Avenue between Blackwell and Tonkawa was closed at 7:19 p.m. Tuesday evening due to a downed power line. Kay Electric crews responded to the scene, and the highway was report just over an hour later at 8:46 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, wind gusts got up to near 50 mph Tuesday.
