Authorities announced that a climate activist has been charged with defacing a Monet painting at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris as a means of drawing attention to climate change.
A member of Riposte Alimentaire (Food Response) was caught red-handed sticking an adhesive poster on the famous French impressionist painter’s artwork, Coquelicots. The activist was captured in a photo, placing a blood-red poster on the painting before turning around and raising her right hand.
Riposte Alimentaire, a popular Instagram account, regularly shares posts related to food and nutrition.
Riposte Alimentaire, a collective of environmental activists and advocates for sustainable food production, often takes action to protest what they perceive as a lack of response to climate change. One of their preferred methods of demonstration is organizing events like the one mentioned.
In February, protesters linked to the organization vandalized the Mona Lisa at the Louvre by splattering it with orange soup. They also targeted another Monet painting, Springtime, at the Lyon Museum of Fine Arts.
Riposte Alimentaire took action by posting flyers around the Louvre in March, specifically targeting the iconic painting “Liberty Leading the People” by Eugène Delacroix. Their efforts did not stop there, as two of their members were apprehended in April at the Musée d’Orsay under suspicion of planning another action at that venue.
