New York Governor Kathy Hochul has been compelled to retract her remarks after claiming that black children in the Bronx do not understand the term “computer.”.
Ms. Hochul discussed her state’s AI project at the Milken Institute Global Conference in California on Monday, claiming that young black children in the Bronx are unaware of the term ‘computer’. And I want to open up the globe to all of them.”
After receiving criticism for her words, the governor apologized and stated that she “misspoke.”.
“I misspoke, and I regret it,” Ms. Hochul said in a statement to The New York Post.
“Of course black children in the Bronx know what computers are; the problem is that they too often lack access to the technology needed to get on track to high-paying jobs in emerging industries like AI.”
Members of the Bronx New York State Assembly called her remarks “misinformed” and “disheartening”.
Ms. Hochul’s statements were deemed “harmful, deeply misinformed, and genuinely appalling” by Amanda Septimo, an assembly member for the 84th district, which includes the Bronx.
She stated, “I would invite Governor Hochul to visit us in the Bronx to experience firsthand the intelligence, resilience, and joy that radiate from Bronx children and residents each day.”
Assemblyman John Zaccaro Jr. also issued a statement condemning the governor’s remarks.
“The underlying perception conveyed about black and brown children from the Bronx is not only disheartening but also deeply concerning,” he stated.
“Not only are they capable, but they also deserve every opportunity that their counterparts present.”
Karines Reyes, who also represents a Bronx neighborhood, said she was “deeply disturbed” by Ms. Hochul’s words “and the underlying perception that she has of black and brown children” from the Bronx.
She continued, “Our children are bright, brilliant, extremely capable, and more than deserving of any opportunities that are extended to other kids.”
“Do better,” Ms. Reyes stated.
