James Moore, the longest-serving inmate in New York State, has been confirmed deceased by the NYS Department of Corrections.
On April 30, 2024, Moore passed away at the Coxsackie Correctional Facility. The cause of his death is currently under investigation and will be disclosed by the Albany County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Moore pleaded guilty to the murder of 14-year-old Pamela Moss in 1962, leading to his conviction. Investigators claimed he raped and strangled Moss. Moore faced 20 denials of parole before receiving it in 2022.
According to DOCCS, they granted him the earliest release on June 6, 2022. However, they mentioned that he was unable to provide a proposed residence that would meet his needs. Recommendations were given to Moore regarding places that could provide him with care, but he refused them.
